A Workshop to Develop Authentic Leadership and Improve Safety Performance
This 2 day leadership training has been designed to develop the skills and capabilities to lead a safety culture that exhibits care. The workshop will cover topics such as emotional intelligence, communication and mindful leadership. As a participant you will make a commitment during the workshop to introducing these concepts into your role at work. Leading Safety Performance™, recognised by the 'Institute of Leadership and Management', is designed for supervisors and managers, developing the skills and understanding that motivate to create working environments where a culture of care can thrive.

|Welcome and Introduction||General introduction from trainer followed by a senior member of the leadership team setting the scene for the learning over the next two days.|
|Aims/Objectives||These are detailed in the learning outcomes.|
|Ice-Breaker||Delegates introduce themselves and take part in a short activity to break the ice.|
|Culture Maturity Ladder®||The Culture of Care Maturity Ladder® is an evolutionary ladder where the organisation becomes more mature as trust and accountability increase and the safety culture becomes increasingly informed.|
|Informed Culture||This section builds on the cultural maturity ladder and looks at how an organisation can develop an informed safety culture (James Reason) by having four main pillars in place:
A reporting culture
A just culture
A learning culture
A flexible culture
|Culture of Denial||Being able to identify warning signs and know what factors make up a safety culture of denial helps an organisation combat these and build resilience.|
|High Reliability Organizations||HRO – A look at what High Reliability Organisations are and what they do that makes them so resilient.|
|Chronic Unease||What is chronic unease? Mindfulness in leadership is important if leaders are going to spot potential safety performance problems and issues.|
|Welcome and Recap||Introduction to day 2 and recap of information covered on previous day.|
|Leadership Excellence||To introduce leadership excellence, delegates are asked to think about what makes a person memorable or have the biggest impact. This then leads into the exercise where the skills and qualities of leadership excellence are examined.|
|Emotional Intelligence||Emotional Intelligence (EI) is said to be more important than IQ. This section gives an overview of the four sections of EI and invites delegates to consider areas for improvement. Delegates explore how EI can be used to manage their “hot buttons”.|
|Leadership Styles||An authentic leader knows that to be effective they need to be able to use a range of different leadership styles and for these to be matched to the right situation and the right people. Here we look at Daniel Goleman’s 6 primal leadership styles: commanding, pacesetting, affiliative, democratic, coaching and visionary.|
|Communication||Leaders need to communicate effectively. We start with a general overview of what makes up communication.
Listening - one of the main skills of effective communication. Active listening skills are essential.
Questioning skills – asking the right questions at the right time is vital for an authentic leader.
|Webmaster||This is a practical exercise where delegates are asked to put together interconnecting lengths of ropes working to a plan. The aim of the exercise is for the delegates to apply the skills discussed over the last 2 days.|
|Personal Action||The group will consider what they personally are going to do to develop their abilities as a leader.|
