Improving Safety Culture by Assessing Organisation-Wide Integration of Safety Practices
Companies invest considerable time and money in an effort to institutionalise safe practices and behaviours in their workforce to improve their organisational safety culture. Rules, regulations and codes of conduct as well as educational programmes establish expectations and provide a safety framework, but do not guarantee adherence or the full integration of behaviours in everyday practice.
Our Awareness to Advocacy Assessment (AAA) is a specially designed tool that measures the degree to which employees exhibit expected behaviours, ranking the organisation on a spectrum ranging from a lack of awareness of safe practices to advocacy for them. This tool goes beyond communication and training to evaluate how and to what extent desirable behaviours have become part of a company’s culture.
This service is unique in its focus on measuring an organisation’s ability to absorb and assimilate information intended to promote safety. Our experts, experienced in all aspects of organisation reliability, not only help you take the pulse of your workforce when it comes to safe practices, but also assist you in identifying which approaches to behavioural change work and which don’t. Our goal is to foster a transformation in organisational safety culture that is real and sustainable, where employees become full-fledged advocates of safety-friendly conduct.

Critical insight into your organisational safety culture
Based on information provided by our clients regarding how expectations around safety are communicated and how safety information is shared in their organisations, we formulate questions designed to elicit meaningful feedback from employees. These questions form the backbone of on-site interviews with individuals and groups from all levels in the company hierarchy and inform on-site observations. The information we glean is reflected in the organisation’s combined score on a 6-point scale:
- Employees show no safety awareness at first.
- Staff demonstrate safety awareness.
- Employees understand safe behaviours and practices.
- Workers’ behaviour reflects a belief in the organisation’s safety goals.
- Employees function as role models and influence safety practices through their actions and behaviour.
- Company personnel have become advocates for safe behaviours and practices.
Once we have gathered the preliminary data, on-site visits take from 1-3 days per site, depending on the organisation’s size. The service concludes with a report documenting our findings and recommendations.
Currently available only through us, this organisational culture assessment instrument is a fast, economical alternative to full organisational culture diagnostics. Although not as comprehensive in scope, this assessment focuses less on external expectations and more on how well the organisation’s internal safety framework is integrated into everyday processes and effectively influences employee behaviour to improve your safety culture.
